GENERAL:
I decided to purchase a twin-turbo Supra about two years ago. Having already driven a highly modified twin-turbo 300ZX for 3 ½ years, I was ready to go to another level of performance. For what I had in mind, the MKIV was the perfect platform to start with. Having driven a highly modified T66 single turbo, I had a really good idea of what I wanted to do with the car. Basically, I wanted to build a “user friendly”, reliable, daily driven street car that could excel in a variety of performance areas. I wanted something that would handle incredibly well on a road race course, run 10-second quarter mile times, have excellent brakes, have a comfortable leather interior, look sharp with only a nice set of rims (without a body kit) and be easy to maintain. With such a long grocery list, there was no better car to modify than the MKIV. So, I started searching for an accident free, clean, black 6 speed turbo Supra with low miles. After about 6 months of looking, I finally found my Supra. The car had only 10,500 miles on it, was stored in a “climate controlled” garage and was only driven about twice a month.
I started buying parts for my project the first week after I brought the car home. Within a month, I had installed a front mount intercooler, Apexi N1 exhaust, and aftermarket coil- over suspension. Afterwards, I had an SP63 single turbo kit, fuel system with 72 lb injectors, and host of HKS and GReddy upgrades installed. This resulted in 631 rwhp @ 24psi and a very fun car to drive. I also dyno’ed at 562 rwhp on pump gas at 20 psi.
ENGINE:
After driving the car with this setup for a while, I decided I would be willing to sacrifice some of the earlier spool-up for a turbo that could make some bigger power. With the help of Angel Robles of Garage Advance, I decided to upgrade to a GA74 turbo with 272 HKS cams and bigger 85lb injectors. With the addition of an AEM, cam gears, a bigger 3 ½ inch down pipe, and a light weight flywheel we were able to optimize the spool to a point I am very happy with.
BRAKES/CHASSIS:
I chose to stick with the factory calipers and rotors since they have been working well for me. I upgraded the brake lines with some Goodrich SS lines. I am using Motul brake fluid and TRD racing brake pads. I can’t say enough good things about this car. My supra is daily driven, has been very dependable and has run low 10-second quarter mile times. It is also a pleasure to drive on the street. The Tein HA coil-over suspension system is, by far, the best coil-over set I have used. They are extremely flexible and can be set up for spirited daily driving, great launches at the drag strip, and weekend road course stints. Once I installed the Teins, I found myself looking for excuses to drive my car more often.
INTERIOR:
All gauges are mounted in easily visible locations and blend in well with the dash to maintain the factory appearance. A B&M shifter was added to shorten the shifts during spirited driving. The 10K TRD tachometer helps monitor the rev limit that has been increased to 8500 RPM. I am currently using the HKS EVC EZ to control boost. I am currently swapping the interior to factory black leather.
To finish up my project, I will install a killer sound system, including JL audio subs, JL audio amps, alpine head unit, and MB Quart separates. I already have these items and they will most likely be installed in the next few months.
EXTERIOR:
I plan on keeping the factory appearance on the outside. I spend a good amount of time keeping the black paint in good condition and looking awesome. I will most likely go with some sort of highly polished wheel to accent the clean black factory lines. This theme follows into my engine bay with a host of polished and chromed parts.
PERFORMANCE:
I asked Angel to tune the car on the conservative side. With some great tuning, he spun the rollers to the tune of 788 rwhp. With the requested conservative tuning, Angel left at least a good 30 rwhp on the table. For now, I am happy with the current results. At a later date, we may go back and fine-tune everything to squeeze out some more hp. These numbers were made with a stock flywheel and I just recently upgraded to a light-weight flywheel, so the actual rwhp numbers and spool up are most likely a little better than what any of my previous dyno sheets show. We also made 610 rwhp on pump gas.
Words cannot describe the awesome feeling of being able to just blow the tires away in third gear at 30 lbs of boost or how hard this car pulls. But to be honest, the greatest reward I have had from the experience of building this car is all the great friends I made along the way.
I would like to especially thank Angel Robles and Horacio Ramos for helping me out on so many different occasions. I really appreciate it.
