GENERAL: My addiction for the Supra started many years ago. Being an avid reader of Turbo Magazine, I kept my eyes out for features of the Supra. I remember the R.S. Akimoto Supra, which is now owned by a dear friend, Ryan Hawkins. I also remember the Black Blitz Bodied Supra. I used to have those articles posted on my wall. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would once own one. My first car in high school was a 1993 Honda Prelude VTEC. I started to modify it with your basic upgrades (Intake, Exhaust, Headers, etc.). It was my pride and joy until it was stolen from me one morning in my driveway. The car was found approximately a week later, stripped. I did not even recognize it when we went to identify it at the impound.
This is where the hunt began for a new car. I considered getting an M3. The day that we went to go do the paper work for the M3, I happen to pick up the Auto Trader. There she was, a stock 1994 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo 6SPD. We went to go look at the car and I immediately fell in love. She was sitting in the garage; I could not resist. So we started to negotiate about the price. The guy told me that someone else had been by earlier and had put an offer on the car. So, I told him I was willing to give him more then what the other guy had offered. I know it wasn't a nice thing to do, but this was the car I wanted. I gave him a deposit and told him I would come back the next day with the rest of the cash. He let me test drive the car that same day; I was in love.
The next day I was at the bank as soon as they opened. I headed over to the guy's house to pick up the car. I had not told anyone what I was getting. Everyone had thought I was getting the M3. My parents did not know what car I was getting. They just knew that they did not have to co-sign for my loan. So, I don't think it really mattered to them at this point. My friend had taken me down to get the car. As we drove her home I could not help myself from seeing what this baby had. So I opened her up on the freeway. Damn, I loved this car!
When I got home with the car, everyone was outside waiting for us to pull up. My friends could not believe that I got a Supra, so everyone wanted to ride. I enjoyed giving everyone of my friends a ride. Some got longer rides then others. To my friends this was the best car ever. To my parents it was great. They didn't have to fork out any cash for my new purchase. My parents had themselves owned a MKII and loved the car. My dad knew that this car would be good to me since he had never had problems with their MKII ever since they owned it. The thing had like 200k on it when they got rid of it. He thought it was a great choice. Everything had seemed to work out great.
At this point in time I was a freshman in college and was working at performance shop. My boss, Thomas at Pann Auto and co-workers agreed with the new purchase. The first week I had the car, we had put an Apex'I Dunk exhaust, HKS FCD, Custom intercooler piping, and Greddy Type-R Blow-off valve on it. The car was also lowered with Eibach springs. I did not have cash for the modifications. My boss was good to me and had purchased everything for me. I just had to work my ass off to pay for everything. We took the car to track when it was stock and it ran a 13.2@108. Later with the modifications done, it ran a 12.2@118. As time progressed the guys at the shop started to encourage me to see what kind of power we could get out of the thing. One of my buddies had a built MKIII and this thing was the beast back in the days. This was when the fastest imports were in 11's. I never wanted to line up against him at the street races. Coincidentally however, we happened to be next to each other at the stop light one time and you know how that went. I stuck him pretty hard. Damn, I was in love.
That following weekend I started to think of what I could do to make some serious power. Being at work, I had all the resources to start building my dream car. I had recently broken up with my girlfriend. She had a 95 Acura Integra that was highly modified. Honda/Acura parts are easy to come by. The car was fitted with the JDM Type-R front end, Mugen front bumper, LS-Vtec conversion/ Turbocharged. This thing was known at the street races. Being my girlfriend's, it was more of a show car. But, it still saw the street races quite often. When we broke up, she decided that she did not want a car that was modified since no one would work on it if something were to happen to it.
So, with the parts that were left over, I sold everything and bought myself a Fastrax T-55R turbocharger. I did not have any other components. But, I did have the most important part-the Turbo. I started to save up. Every penny I got went to the project. I started to collect parts in my closet. The HKS GT waste gate, HKS blow off valves, fuel system, VPC, ITC, AFC, etc. I was still lacking a manifold, the remainder of the kit. So, I had a buddy make the rest of the kit for me. The car ran great and was a beast. After messing around with it too much, the thing went south. So, we started to build the motor on it. Things progressed as I worked at the shop. When the car was close to completion, we decided to do more. First it was just the bottom end that was built with J.E. pistons, Crower Rods. That was supposed to be it. Then, since the head was off we decided to port and polish. Then we stuffed it with some oversize valves and all the other goodies. Then NOS was put in since the intake manifold was off. We plumped the NOS. Everything else seemed to be going great. We decided to upgrade the ECU. I could not see myself spending $1200 for the G-force ECU upgraded. So, I sold all of my Piggyback stuff and went with the Haltech E6K-8.
We had a few issues with the motor since the car never seemed to run perfect with the Haltech. That is why the car has an AEM EMS in it now. That has to be one of the best choices I have made so far in this build up. Thanks, Dave & Jason. As the car was coming together I had purchased a set of silver Blitz Z1 Technospeeds. The car also received the full cage, fuel cell, and many other goodies while it was being put back together. My whole intention of building the car was for the 1320. But as things progressed and with me working at shop, I gained more connections that were willing to help out with the car. That explains the body kit. The paint and body work was taken care of by a friend of mine, Jacie of SDCS. After the car was completed with the paint and body work, I had the centers of the Technospeeds done in black chrome and the lips chromed to give it a meaner stance.
My car then went UPRD for the suspension work. There, J.C. Skool and I came up with the crazy idea of doing the Twin Turbo set-up that I have currently. I sold my turbo set-up to a friend in order to afford the new set-up. Ironically, I also own that car now. As the progress began on my car, I made some changes to it, like the Fikse FM/10's. The car has pretty much remained the same for the past few months. I am dying to run it. I just want to make sure that everything is working properly together. I have way too much money into the car and cannot afford any other mishaps.
This project has been a very big part of life for the past 3 years. It has been my life. Some people have cars as hobby, others just enjoy cars. As for myself, I live cars. That explains why this car is the way it is today. For all the guys out there who plan on building a car of their dreams, I just want you guys to know ahead of time to be patient. Not to knock any shop down, but all shops lag to an extent. It takes time to get your parts. And if you want anything that is custom, that will take more time and money. Do not get discourage because honestly, shit happens. "If, you don't break it, you aren't pushing it hard enough!. It also doesn't take all the money in the world to build what your dream car is, it takes dedication. Things just happen to fall into place when you know what it is that you want. I am not by any means a rich person, financially. I am rich with all the support that I have from friends, family, and my dearest Taylor. If, it wasn't for these people, this car would not exist now. Taylor, thanks for all your support in building this project. I could not have done it without you. It would not be on this level if it wasn't for your support. For all the haters out there, this one is dedicated to you!
In closing, I would just like to say that with my experiences in this industry, you will come across a lot of people. Some will be very cool people and others who think they are god to everyone. That is what makes this industry suck at times. But in the end, the guys who are really in to the love the sport will shine. There are lots of guys out there who have helped out in this project. I do not want to mention any names neither good nor bad. You guys know who you are. Either way, I thank you all. It's the encouragements that make one try harder and the negative people who make me succeed. Just remember one thing everyone starts off somewhere. Hope you guys like the car!
